So we've jumped forward a bit - Macduff goes to wake the king and finds him dead; Macbeth goes up to "check" on the king and slaughters the framed footmen. Everyone's bewailing and carrying-on except for Malcolm and Donalbane, the king's sons, who opt to flee lest they be killed next. Banquo gets further second thoughts, and goes off for a ride with his only son, and Macbeth - incredibly transparently - wheedles the key info about the ride and sends murderers after them. He sends two, and a third shows there unexpectedly. The only version I ever saw had the servant also serve as the third murderer. They kill Banquo, but Fleance escapes. At a feast for the most important people, the murderer arrives to make his or her report to Macbeth - where we are right now in the comic. The report's made in the middle of the dinner party, as you see in the background.
